It’s hot as a firecracker outside, which gives us all the Fourth of July feels! We’re already dreamin’ of the day off by the pool or the lake, eating burgers and ’dogs, drinking lemonade and flying our flags high until sparklers and fireworks light up our evening.

This day should be full of treats because, hey, it’s our birthday, USA! If you’re looking for a few fresh, fun and easy ideas to make your Independence Day gathering a little sweeter, you’ve arrived.

Homemade ice cream

July isn’t just the birth month of our great country, it’s also NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH. Hey-O. Could it get any better?

Actually, yes, it can. Turns out you don’t even have to have a machine to make a creamy bowl of happiness. This popular blog post from traveling foodies Kevin & Amanda shows you how to make ice cream without a machine step by step with ease. While they have some scrumptious recipes here for different flavors, make yours Fourth of July ready by throwing on some red, white and blue toppings — colored sprinkles, marshmallows, or even strawberries or blueberries will do the trick!

Fruit skewers

Speaking of strawberries and blueberries, they make great fruit skewers that you can have for refreshing snacks all day. All you need are:

  • 1 large container of strawberries, with stems removed and sliced in half
  • 1 large container of blueberries, jumbo if you can find them
  • 1 bunch of bananas, peeled and sliced into small rounds
  • 1 bag of wooden skewers

Start by rotating a strawberry half and a banana round up a wooden skewer. Three each should be enough. Fill the remaining space on the skewer with blueberries, resembling the American Flag. Add a bowl of whipped cream or cream cheese fruit dip nearby for dipping!

Fireworks sugar cookie cake

Errbody loves cookies. Especially when they’re baked with red, white and blue sprinkles, topped icing and patriotic M&Ms. YUM. This amazing recipe calls for mixing those sprinkles and M&Ms into the dough with several added to the top before baking. Once out of the oven, decorate with homemade icing and serve with a little dab of that homemade ice cream. As Dolly Parton says in Steel Magnolias, it’ll cut the sweetness.

Happy Fourth of July, friends. May your day be fun, relaxing and full of love for our country!

Show your colors all day July 4, and all summer long, with our America & Stars & Stripes tee!
